Fall Quarter Poster Presentations Event

Congratulations to those BioResource and Agricultural Engineering students that are on their way to completing their senior projects on time! On Thursday, November 29th, BRAE seniors enrolled in BRAE 461 displayed their hard work and senior project proposals at the poster presentations event. The poster presentations represent the culmination of the seniors' work throughout their entire experience and education at Cal Poly. This event allows seniors to display their senior project proposals and explain their preliminary findings to faculty and current students.

“It was awesome to see all of the different projects that students were proposing and how they were applying their education. I am looking forward to completing my senior project and letting Cal Poly use it to continue the education of alternative energies within our department.” – Seth Rossow (ASM, June '08)

In addition to seniors, BRAE 128 students displayed their group projects. BRAE 128 is a required freshman introductory class.

Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year... Plus, Learn Some Environmentally Savvy Tips for the Holidays!

The BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department would like to extend its gratitude towards you and your family this holiday season. Thank you for your continual support regarding our enewsletter and other marketing efforts. We appreciate your feedback and comments. Creating our BRAE enewsletter has been a very worthwhile experience and crucial tool in improving the public awareness of our outstanding program.

This holiday season we would like to encourage everyone to keep up their efforts to create a ‘sustainable' environment by conserving energy when possible. Just to give you some ideas, we have listed some suggestions below:

  • To save paper (and money), try wrapping presents in newspaper or gift paper from previous years. Old wrapping paper can also be used to make gift tags! You may also consider tying packages with twine (a natural fiber).
  • When mailing gift packages to family and loved ones, reuse the packaging 'peanuts' that come in the gift boxes you receive. Note: If you have too many 'peanuts' and would like to drop them off somewhere, chain stores like Mail Boxes Etc. will accept them.
  • Out of gift ideas or don't want to add to landfills? Give presents like movie, concert, and sports tickets in place of physical gifts. The only thing that gets thrown away is the ticket, which can be recycled later.
  • Getting ready to decorate the house with lights? If we may suggest, try buying smaller-sized holiday lights to conserve energy. These are also safer than larger lights because they give off less heat and will decrease your risk of a fire hazard.
  • Going out of town or leaving lights on so Santa can find your house? We recommend you put holiday lights on timers to save electricity.
  • The holidays are full of family gatherings and most of all, delicious meals. Since you will be running the dishwasher many times during the holidays, remember to wash only when there is a full load. Also, you may want to try air drying your dishes to conserve energy.

We wish you and your family the best this holiday season and a Happy New Year! Check back with us in January to see our next edition of the BRAE enewsletter!

Just a note: the campus will be on academic break from Saturday, December 8th through Sunday, January 6th.

"Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful..."

During this time of year, we understand that temperatures can drop dramatically and you will be tempted to crank up your heater. However, in addition to increasing your energy and gas bills to frightful amounts, increasing your energy use can cause harm to the environment and put a strain on the earth's natural resources. To help conserve energy within your home this winter we have provided you with a CHECKLIST that identifies ways that can make your home more energy efficient. Thank you to SRP Powerwise Energy Solutions for creating this conservation checklist.
